‘Frustrate him’: Tim Sherwood delivers verdict on Emerson Royal v Jack Grealish

Tim Sherwood says Emerson Royal had his ‘best game’ in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt after Antonio Conte’s side beat Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday in the Premier League.

The former Aston Villa boss thinks Emerson did ‘really well’ against Jack Grealish and he ‘frustrated’ the Manchester City playmaker, despite constantly fouling him, as he told Premier League Productions (05/02/23 at 7:20 pm).

For the fifth game running, Pep Guardiola has rocked up to north London, not only has his team lost for the fifth time in a row, but they have once again failed to score.

That’s a pretty alarming record for the champions of England and a ground that just doesn’t bode well for them.

That man that ended up stealing the headlines yesterday was Harry Kane because he become the club’s all-time leading scorer with 267 when he scored the only goal of the game. 

But Sherwood was sure to give Emerson Royal a mention for his defensive display against Man City’s free-scoring side.

“I thought Emerson Royal had his best game in a Tottenham shirt, for me,” said Sherwood. “I thought he played really well against Grealish.

“He frustrated him. Yes, he was making a lot of fouls, but that’s what you have to do to Jack Grealish. You can’t let him have it his own way. And he didn’t.

“I thought Davies on the other side done a good job as well. So, in wide areas, they were very secure.”

PERFECT TIMING FROM EMERSON

It just goes to show how competition from within can push you. With new signing Pedro Porro on the bench, Emerson couldn’t have timed this performance better.

Some questioned if the deadline day capture would start against Man City, but it wasn’t meant to be as he still settles into his new surroundings.

Well, Porro might have to wait a little longer for that moment because Emerson is now sending out signals to Conte and Co that he can’t be dropped.

The £26 million Tottenham man (Sky Sports) has shown glimpses here and there, but he now needs to show consistency, take his game to the next level and cut out the errors.
