Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has shared what he’s been hearing about Steven Bergwijn in Tottenham training.
The Dutch winger hasn’t had the easiest of seasons. He’s barely started for Spurs, and even when he comes off the bench, he only gets a few minutes here or there.
Antonio Conte himself has said it’s unfair, but Bergwijn seemingly isn’t helping his cause.
According to Gold, the winger takes these setbacks to heart and he allows his lack of gametime to weigh him down in training rather than being spurred on to prove that he belongs in the starting XI.
What’s been said?
Gold spoke about Bergwijn.
“From what I hear from people behind the scenes at Spurs, he, how do I put this in the best way? Matt Doherty when he wasn’t being picked would go away and work incredibly hard and get Conte’s attention, with Bergwijn, from what I understand from people in the club and those who work with him, he lets it get to him, when he’s not in the team he feels it and I get it, I do get it, he takes these setbacks to heart,” Gold said.

Wrong mentality
As sad as it is to say, Bergwijn won’t get anywhere with this mentality.
Yes, he’s been left out of the team on almost a weekly basis this season, but at the end of the day, he’s in control of his own destiny.
If he turns up to training and plays his heart out, it will eventually be impossible to ignore his efforts, but if he’s feeling sorry for himself and sulking, he’s got no chance of working his way back into the team.
Bergwijn needs to change his mentality if he wants to get back into the Spurs team.
