Tottenham are said to be huge admirers of Crystal Palace gem Marc Guehi – who sadly looks set to miss out on a place in the England World Cup squad.
According to Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic, Fabio Paratici – Director of Football at Spurs – adores the £20m defender, and The Times believe Tottenham are going to target a new centre-back in 2023.
Now, a rumour from the Telegraph could see Guehi join the north Londoners very soon.
Tottenham Guehi hopes boosted
Well, in our view at least, Tottenham now have a better chance of signing the England international.
The Telegraph believe Gareth Southgate has omitted the Crystal Palace No.6 from his World Cup squad, despite the fact he has been outstanding for the south Londoners across the past 18 months.
We will find out for certain at 2pm, but if Guehi really has been left out, he may now be starting to think about taking a step up in an attempt to be recognised.
Clearly, consistently excellent performances for Crystal Palace are not enough for Southgate to consider the 22-year-old as someone he can genuinely rely on at the World Cup, which is nonsense given the fact Tyrone Mings is in line to be included.
Nevertheless, as we saw when Jack Grealish failed to play much for England while at Aston Villa, only for Southgate to use him frequently after he joined Manchester City, Guehi may have to join Spurs to become a Three Lions regular.
Guehi will cost Tottenham millions
In our view, Crystal Palace may end up charging Tottenham £50m or more for Guehi.
The Abidjan-born colossus is contracted to the Eagles until June 2026, and Crystal Palace could quite reasonably point to the £85m deal for Harry Maguire as reason to justify a price tag in the region of £50m.
It will not be a cheap deal for Paratici to negotiate, but with the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Clement Lenglet and Eric Dier struggling at Tottenham, it is time to spend heavily on an outstanding centre-back option.
