Former Rangers star Fraser Aird got his name on the scoresheet last night, scoring the opener for Edmonton over York United in the Canadian Premier League – and the former Ibrox winger’s worldie had fans on Twitter stunned.
Aird’s strike seven minutes into the second half saw the former Canadian international rifle the ball home from 35 yards to give his side the lead in the 1-1 draw.
After being pegged back for a share of the spoils, Aird was happy with his stunning strike, joking it was nice for fans to see it after scoring them regularly in training.
“I do it in training all the time, so it’s nice that people actually get to see it live, so I’ll take it,” Aird said at full-time, as quoted by The Sault Star. “It just kept opening up for me and I didn’t get that chance (to shoot) throughout the game, and the defenders kept dropping, so I thought I would hit it, if you don’t shoot you don’t score.
“So I took my chance, put my head down, struck through the ball and it flew into the top corner.”
Edmonton could have won the game after being awarded a last-minute penalty but Easton Ongaro hit it off the outside of the post.
Aird, who spent six years at Rangers between 2011 and 2017, made a total of 85 appearances and scored 12 times for the Light Blues.
The boyhood Rangers fan has had stints with Falkirk, Dunfermline, Dundee United, Cove Rangers, Valour FC and FC Edmonton since leaving Ibrox.
Fans on Twitter were blown away by his incredible strike, with one even joking Rangers should “bring him home.”
