Rangers B midfielder Cole McKinnon was pleased with the performance of the young Gers in yesterday’s 1-0 defeat by Edinburgh City – and the Ibrox starlet thinks it is exactly what they need as the B team players look to push their way into the first-team plans.

McKinnon, who spent time on loan last season with East Fife, thinks David McCallum and Brian Gilmour’s side are starting to play like Steven Gerrard’s Scottish champions – having left watching assistant manager Gary McAllister impressed.

Despite losing to an experienced City side, the Rangers B team put in an impressive display against their League Two opponents and McKinnon has been happy with their first week back for pre-season.

“I thought it was good, even although we lost the game I think all round and the way we moved the ball was good,” McKinnon told Rangers TV.

“We have only been in for a week and I think we are starting to play a lot like the first-team and that is our aim.

“The boys have came back in fit and sharp and we have been training and trying to replicate what the first-team are doing as much as possible so it has been really good.”

Young Rangers stars were “excellent” in friendly defeat

While McKinnon has first-team experience from his stint at East Fife, many of the side who featured against Edinburgh City have yet to play any first-team football.

The young Gers midfielder thinks that despite this, the B team were “excellent” in defeat as they dealt with much of what City had to offer, adding: “A lot of the boys haven’t really played against that level at first-team and today you could see they coped with it well. They were winning balls and going into 50/50’s and I thought the boys were excellent.

“It is what we need, we are all pushing to try and get round that first-team side and these are the games we need to play against first-team’s so that we are ready when we go round there.”
