Reports emerged over the weekend stating that Tottenham explored the possibility of recalling Oliver Skipp after his string of impressive performances for Norwich this season.

Recalling Skipp from Norwich would certainly have been an interesting move, but we can’t help but feel there’s another youngster Spurs should have looked at recalling.

Indeed, Ryan Sessegnon is earning all sorts of plaudits during his time at Hoffenheim, and there is reason to think he’d have added more to Spurs’ first-team than Skipp.

First and foremost, the Bundesliga is a much stronger league than the Championship, so you would imagine that Sessegnon would have a much more immediate impact if he came back to Tottenham last month.

On top of that, he’d plug a position that has quickly turned into a problem area for Spurs.

Indeed, Sergio Reguilon has been out injured for the past few weeks, while Ben Davies endured months of absence earlier this season due to an ankle ligament problem.

Left-back has been a bit of a problem for Spurs, and Sessegnon could have come in and provided a bit of extra depth in that area, while he could also add something on the wings, not that Tottenham need that with the number of options they have on the flanks.

If Skipp would have come in, it would have been tough to envisage how he’d break into the squad with the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso vying for the central midfield spots, but with Sessegnon being able to play in multiple roles, one would think that Mourinho would always be able to find a use for him, regardless of whether or not he’s first choice.

That isn’t to say that Skipp isn’t a talented player, and we’re sure he’ll have a role to play at Spurs next season, but with the midfield being oversaturated at the moment, recalling him would have made little sense, and perhaps that’s why he wasn’t brought back into the fold.

However, with left-back being a problem and Sessegnon performing so well in Germany, trying to recall him in January may have made a lot more sense.
