Forget Sesko and Osimhen, Arsenal should be targeting ‘lethal’ striker who’s scored more league goals than Erling Haaland this season

The 1-1 draw against Brentford once again highlighted Arsenal’s desperate need for attacking reinforcements.

In their last three Premier League games against Fulham, Everton and Brentford, Arsenal have had a total of 44 shots on their opponents goal, scoring just four.

Despite taking the lead in all three games, they have only won one, failing to capitalise on their dominance – something which has proved costly time and time again this season for Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have dropped 16 points from winning positions, posing the question, who will be the man to score the goals to turn these one points into three?

Arsenal should target Mateo Retegui

There have been many strikers linked to an Arsenal transfer with Liam Delap and Victor Osimhen being named in the past, but Atalanta forward Mateo Retegui seems to have entered his name into the hat.

The Italian international has had a campaign to remember, scoring 23 Serie A goals, two more than Man City star Erling Haaland has managed in the Premier League.

He joined the club from Genoa, where in 2023/24 he scored seven goals and not many expected him to set the world alight from the get-go, but he is now on course to top the Serie A scoring charts.

It has been reported by Calciomercato that Arsenal are one of the clubs interested in the striker along with Chelsea.

Given how he has fared compared to the Gunners front line this season, it makes sense why.

Luciano Spalletti is a big fan of Retegui

Retegui has 18 caps for Italy, finding the net six times including two in this year’s UEFA Nations League.

When speaking on Retegui’s form this season, Azzurri boss Luciano Spaletti heaped high praise on the striker back in October 2024, saying:

“He’s a very serious lad. Inside the box, he is lethal and now he has learned how to connect with the team better.

“He’s going to become a top player.”

Spaletti will be hoping his star striker can continue his form for the national team heading into the World Cup next year.

And Arsenal will be sure to keep tabs on the goal machine for the rest of the season as a big summer window awaits them.
