Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are watching the Premier League title slip out of reach yet again after dropping points in a 1-1 draw with Brentford

The final weeks of the Premier League season are in danger of turning into a victory parade for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who are now ten points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand.

Arsenal enjoyed a spectacular win against Real Madrid, but couldn’t keep the party going against Brentford. After going ahead through Thomas Partey, the Gunners suffered a Yoanne Wissa equaliser to draw 1-1 at the Emirates to leave the title looking further away than ever.

Saturday’s result was just another example of a concerning pattern for Arsenal, which explains how they have found themselves so far adrift of the champions-elect.

Arsenal have dropped 16 points from winning positions in the Premier League

Arsenal’s problem hasn’t been going ahead, but staying there. This season has seen them drop 16 points from winning positions with eight draws, an incredibly frustrating stat for fans.

In the two previous campaigns combined, they dropped 17 points from winning positions. That means that with six games still to go, there is a chance they throw away more points from leading positions this season than in the last two put together.

This season, Mikel Arteta’s side have also let leads slip through their fingers against Everton, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and twice against Brighton.

Arteta reacts as Gunners drop points again

The Arsenal boss was less than pleased with Arsenal’s draw, which allows Liverpool to seal the title next weekend.

“We are disappointed with the result,” Arteta admitted after the draw with Brentford. “We had full control of the game and conceded a very poor goal.”

“It was not good enough and when you don’t do what you have to do against this team, you concede a goal.”

Wissa’s goal came in the 74th minute, 13 minutes after Thomas Partey had fired Arsenal into the lead. Despite being marked by Jurrien Timber, Wissa was able to hook the ball home on the half-volley from a set-piece scramble. The Gunners had 14 shots to Brentford’s three and dominated possession, but still managed to share the spoils.
