Liverpool are up for sale, and that has led to so many rumours around who the club’s next owners will be.

There have been murmurs about Bahrain, Steven Pagliuca and Dubai purchasing the club, while Conor McGregor, inevitably, threw his hat in the ring.

As entertaining as it would be to see McGregor purchase the Reds, it’s not going to happen.

A self-proclaimed ‘billionaire’ McGregor’s net worth isn’t thought to be much more than the $1bn mark, and without a lot more external investment he would not be able to front up a bid.

However, McGregor could become a part-owner of Liverpool if he were able to form some sort of consortium, and there is a prime candidate with a lot of cash who he could speak to about this.

We’re talking about LeBron James.

The NBA icon’s net worth is said to be comfortably in the billions these days. He’s a Liverpool fan and he’s actually already a shareholder in the Reds.

With the 37-year-old’s professional basketball career seemingly winding down, he’ll need another sporting passion to drive him forwards in retirement.

We’ve former NBA stars go into ownership previously with Michael Jordan’s Charlotte Hornet’s investment, and there’s reason to believe that LeBron would be keen to emulate the man he’s so often compared to.

James is already a shareholder – so the interest is clearly there. And with the basketball star already having a good relationship with McGregor, perhaps there is an agreement to be reached between the two parties here.

McGregor and James, along with a few others, would be able to form a mega-rich consortium capable of buying out FSG at Anfield, and while this does sound beyond belief, McGregor and LeBron have made both of their career’s out of exceeding every expectation put before them.

This isn’t likely to happen, but if McGregor wants to actually be a player in this Liverpool takeover, he should get on the phone to LeBron James about a joint bid.
