On September 1st – transfer deadline day – Leeds attempted to add Cody Gakpo to their attack, which already contains the likes of Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison and Crysencio Summerville, to name a few.
Andrea Radrizzani confirmed that the Netherlands international was a target for Leeds on his personal Twitter account, and some sources have since claimed that they will make another attempt in January.
However, with people expecting Gakpo to shine at the World Cup and increase his value, we believe Jesse Marsch should focus on developing his very own answer to the precocious Dutchman.
What’s the story?
Well, Leeds have a talented forward from the Netherlands of their own in the aforementioned Summerville.
A £1.3m signing from Feyenoord under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020, the 20-year-old has already made eight Premier League appearances for Leeds, but none of those have come as starts.
Of course, that is understandable when talented forwards such as Harrison, Luis Sinisterra and others are ahead of him in the pecking order.
Summerville can compete with them – after all, he has been described as a “sensational” talent who is also “too good” to be playing Under-21 football.
However, if Gakpo is added to the competition, it may lead to some disillusionment from the Leeds No.10 – who clearly backs himself to shine having taken Raphinha’s shirt number.
Summerville may feel that Marsch doesn’t value his qualities if Gakpo is brought to Elland Road, given the fact that they both like to play on the left flank where they tend to cut inside on their stronger right foot.
Leeds could soon be relying on Crysencio Summerville
It is important for Marsch to keep Summerville happy in Yorkshire, as Leeds could soon find themselves relying on him with interest in Harrison ramping up.
Newcastle remain seriously interested in signing the Leeds No.11 after failing with a summer approach, while Tottenham are also keen on the 25-year-old.
If Leeds receive an irresistible offer in January, then Summerville could become a vital player for Marsch in the second half of the campaign.
