Yesterday, Newcastle sent their Under-23 side to face Aston Villa’s young guns at Villa Park, in what was an entertaining Premier League 2 clash.
The Magpies won 2-1 thanks to goals from Adam Wilson and Tom Allan, with the latter’s strike receiving plenty of attention, and rightly so.
What’s the story?
Well, after receiving the ball close to the halfway line, Allan channeled his inner Jonjo Shelvey and lobbed Oliwier Zych in spectacular fashion.
You can see the 22-year-old’s phenomenal long-range strike below.
Wow. If Newcastle’s Goal of the Season award involves Under-23 games, then we may already have a winner.
It was reminiscent of Shelvey’s goal for Swansea against Aston Villa back in 2014, when the England international embarrassed Brad Guzan from miles out.
Clearly, Allan has been watching the Newcastle No.8 closely, and it’s safe to say he executed the daring effort to perfection.
To put even more gloss on the strike, it gave the young Magpies a 1-0 lead just before half-time, which surely created a positive atmosphere in the dressing room.
Tom Allan will have to work hard for Newcastle chance

At the age of 22, you would expect Allan to have more than just one first-team appearance for Newcastle under his belt.
Sadly, the Newcastle-born midfielder has only played just once for the Magpies, as he appeared in the FA Cup win over Rochdale back in 2020.
He did, however, impress supporters with his performance.
The pathway into the first-team has now become even more difficult following the arrival of Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi on Tyneside.

Thanks to the Saudi Arabian takeover, Newcastle can afford to sign almost anybody they want, which doesn’t bode well for young prospects hoping to be given an opportunity by Eddie Howe.
In our view, Allan will have to keep doing mesmeric things like his strike against Aston Villa if he is to add to his one and only appearance.
