Aston Villa’s deadline day involved a Championship clash with Brentford.

Aston Villa enjoyed a busy transfer deadline day, with a number of deals going through and a game against Brentford to contend with. Unsurprisingly, there was more than enough for Villa fans on forum VillaTalk to discuss…

Deadline day deals

Aston Villa managed to sign two players while letting another three former first-team members move on. The general consensus amongst supporters is that the acquisitions of Neil Taylor and Scott Hogan and the departures of Ashley Westwood, Jordan Ayew and Ross McCormack have been good pieces of business for the Villans.

Is Steve Bruce on the road to failure?

Despite an arguably strong window, the optimism amongst Villa supporters almost completely evaporated following their defeat to Brentford. Not only was the manner of the 3-0 loss disappointing, but the fact that they have failed to win any of their last six – losing four in the process – has left some supporters to question whether Steve Bruce really is the right man to take Villa back to the promised land. The top six is now 10 points away so the winless run surely needs to end in the very near future, or the frustration towards Bruce could intensify.

James Chester’s off night

James Chester undoubtedly endured a difficult night against Brentford, and while a small minority of fans slated his display, the majority were willing to remember that the centre-back has been excellent for most of the campaign and is entitled to an off night.

Birkir Bjarnason’s debut

There is already some worry about how good a signing Birkir Bjarnason is going to prove to be after a disappointing debut. The supporters are suggesting that the 28-year-old looked to be off the pace and certainly lost the midfield battle against the Bees. With Bjarnason not playing since early December, fans appear willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but they seem to expect much improvement in the coming games.

Tommy Elphick vs Nathan Baker

While Chester’s performance was forgiven by Villa supporters, the debate surrounding his centre-back partner continued with some suggesting that Tommy Elphick should come back in at the expense of Nathan Baker. Though Elphick has not captured the imagination since arriving, a large portion of fans have been impressed by his attitude and leadership and feel Baker has probably not done enough to keep him out of the team.
