Rangers are reportedly in the race to sign San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Jan Gregus on a free transfer in the January transfer window – and here are five facts on the midfielder, who is hardly a household name in Europe:

Rangers in race to sign Gregus: Five facts

Contractual situation

The 31-year-old only joined San Jose in January, at the beginning of the 2022 MLS season. But he signed a contract that was an initial 12 months, with the option of a further 12 months. That option has not yet been exercised.

It means that any interested parties would be able to sign Gregus, as things stand, on a free transfer right now. It would not only be a pre-contract either, because he would be able to join from January 1 – his deal ends on Dec 31.

Rangers have an array of midfielders. John Lundstram is first choice and normally, it is whoever was available to partner under Gio van Bronckhorst. Whether that be Steven Davis, Ryan Jack or Glen Kamara in the middle.

But none are renowned for their goalscoring prowess. Of course, that was left to Scott Arfield and Malik Tillman playing in the 10 role. Gregus can change that – adding creativity from deep, a bit like Tom Rogic at Celtic.

Vladimir Weiss relationship

A 36-time Slovakia international, Gregus is well known on the international scene. But it may be of interest to know that in 10 of his 36 caps, he has shared the pitch with ex-Ibrox winger Vladimir Weiss – who remains a Rangers icon.

Weiss, now 33, spent the 2010-11 season on loan at Rangers from Man City. He had a hans in 20 goals during 35 games, helping Rangers win the Premiership and the League Cup. If Gregus needs advice, Weiss could help

Scotland winner

Eagle-eyed fans of Scotland will recognise Gregus’ name. In a UEFA Nations League match, Gregus scored the only goal of the game in Slovakia as he helped his country beat Scotland. A well-placed finish from all of 22 yards.

So clearly, Gregus is capable of scoring goals – and creating them. In 74 games for Minnesota, he laid on 17 assists – one every four games. Similar at San Jose, laying on seven assists in his 29 games this season. Creative.

Rennes interest

So, La Gazzetta Express report that Rangers are interested in landing Gregus – who is now more than likely to leave on a free transfer. But they are not alone in their interest, with Europa League side Stade Rennais also interested.

Where does Gregus go? Chances are, he would be a rotational option at Rennes – but would have European football. At Rangers, he would start – but lacks the chance to shine on the European stage. It will be an interesting battle.
