La Gazzetta Express claim Rangers are interested in luring Slovakian star Jan Gregus to Ibrox on a free transfer next month – with his contract in the MLS about to expire. Gregus is a widely-experienced holding midfielder.
The 31-year-old is about to see his year-long contract at MLS side San Jose Earthquakes come to an end. The MLS side do have the option to extend his deal by another year but it appears that he is going to leave on a free transfer.
His contract expires on December 31, allowing clubs to get him for nothing. His CV also includes more than 100 appearances for Danish side FC Copenhagen, 101 outings for Banik Ostrava and 74 for another MLS side – Minnesota.
Renowned for his creativity, Gregus laid on seven assists in 29 games for San Jose during the 2022 season. At Minnesota, he had a hand in 21 goals during his 74 outings. His passing has clearly caught the eye of Michael Beale.
The report states that Ligue 1 outfit Rennes, who are currently in the Europa League, want to sign him. But Rangers are also keen, looking to add players without affecting their finances too much. Gregus seems to fit the bill at Ibrox.

On a free, Rangers could do a lot worse than handing Gregus a two-year deal. Able to play as a holding midfielder, or as an eight, his passing is a real highlight. His creativity might just give the likes of Ryan Kent more ammunition.
Rangers do have options in midfield. John Lundstram is first choice at the base of the midfield, while Glen Kamara is considered a favourite of Michael Beale. Steven Davis and Ryan Jack are also options. But Davis could retire soon.
Kamara could be sold. So, there is the need for additions in the middle of the park, especially for a midfielder with some creativity and Gregus is certainly that. With nearly 400 club appearances, and 36 caps, he is also experienced.
