The fallout from Argentina’s defeat to Spain in FIFA World Cup 2026 final will continue long after the final whistle of the tournament was blown.
Argentina have been heavily criticized for the way in which they approach the game, with many believing they are far too physical.

There were ugly scenes just after the South American giants lost their crown to Spain in Sunday’s final following a 1-0 extra-time defeat in New Jersey.
Indeed, long after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in normal time, substitute midfielder Leandro Paredes received a red card even after the match had finished.
The midfielder’s behavior that caused the sending off has been a big talking point and FIFA are set to investigate it along with other incidents.
Argentina facing FIFA investigation after ugly scenes following World Cup final
According to Sky Sports, FIFA – soccer’s governing body – are set to review what happened on the pitch in East Rutherford.
Paredes clashed with Spain players Eric Garcia and Gavi. The Argentina star was pictured pushing Garcia in the face, before wrestling Gavi to the ground while holding the Spain player’s substitute bib.
That was not the only flashpoint, either. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina appeared to swing a punch at Spain midfielder Rodri when the latter ran onto the pitch to celebrate winning the World Cup.
Further footage appeared to show Argentina assistant coach Daniel Ayala attempting to strike Spain midfielder Dani Olmo in the face.
FIFA could feasibly decide to take additional disciplinary action, although there will be an investigation first.
It was certainly a sour end to what had been a brilliant World Cup, albeit the final itself failed to live up to expectations.
Argentina have been a brilliant team over the past few years, winning the World Cup, two Copa Americas and reaching Sunday’s final.
There is little doubt, however, that they did not cover themselves in glory after losing to Spain.
