Newcastle United have been linked with Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso, but it seems that the Magpies will find it hard to bring him to St. James’ Park.
Newcastle United’s interest
According to The Mirror (print edition, page 72, June 14, 2020), the prospective new owners of Newcastle – Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) – want to sign Alonso – who can also operate as a wing-back – in the summer transfer window (click here to read more).
It may not be easy to convince the Spain international who has won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Europa League and has played in the Champions League to move to the Magpies this summer, and the prospective new Newcastle owners’ reported quest to sign the 29-year-old has just become harder.
Advantage Sevilla?
According to Estadio Deportivo, Alonso’s father, Alonso Snr, wants him to play for Sevilla, with the Spanish club themselves interested in the former Fiorentina man.
Sevilla have finished fourth in La Liga this season and will play in the Champions League next campaign, and that will give them an edge over Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has outlined how striker Andy Carroll reacted after missing a good chance to score in their goalless draw with Brighton and Hove Albion away from home in the Premier League on Monday evening.
Bruce told The Times: “Carroll’s beating himself up in there. He knows he should have maybe scored the winner.”
