Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle United are planning a new deal for midfielder Bruno Guimaraes amid interest from a number of clubs this summer – with the Brazil international due a “salary increase” after some wonderful form.

Guimaraes, 24, has been excellent for the Toon. Joining the club in January from Lyon for a fee in the region of £35million, the midfielder has already become a fan favourite. That is despite only playing 24 times since his move.

But his seven goals, including a brace against Brentford last time out in a 5-1 win, has fans drooling over his form. Michael Owen even suggests that Eddie Howe must see Guimaraes as a player worth in the region of £80million.

Signing a deal at Newcastle until June 2026 in January, it looks as if Newcastle could already hand Guimaraes a new contract. Clubs are interested; The Mail say Manchester City are keen on Guimaraes. But Romano has good news.

Romano: Newcastle planning new deal for Bruno Guimaraes

What a signing Guimaraes has been. A player with immense quality. It was seen as a coup when the Toon pulled off his capture in the January window. But most importantly for Newcastle, he seems like a good person.

Already, the midfielder has earned English and is attempting interviews. He has a brilliant relationship with the Toon fans. How long Newcastle can keep him, remains to be seen. But he looks happy, and he is excelling.

It is all about Newcastle matching Guimaraes’ ambition. If they can get into Europe this season, it would be a brilliant achievement. It will convince Guimaraes to stay on at Tyneside. Failure to do so, and his mind will wander.

But as things stand, it looks positive and if Newcastle can tie him to a new deal, it would be brilliant news for the Toon. He is expected to start this weekend, as the Toon face a tough trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
