Liverpool have been linked with Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic but Fabrizio Romano insists that there has been no talks between the Croatia international and the Premier League giants.

Jude Bellingham, if reports are to be believed, may already be too expensive as his price-tag soars beyond £100 million. Enzo Fernandez, meanwhile, is a Chelsea player these days. What’s more, Moises Caicedo recently signed a new contract at Brighton, and Sofyan Amrabat appears to have his heart set on Barcelona.

So the options, as far as Liverpool’s midfield targets are concerned, are not quite as wide-ranging now as they might have been a few months ago.

Romano, meanwhile, believes that reports suggesting World Cup semi-finalist Brozovic could swap San Siro for Anfield are wide of the mark.

“I’m aware of some reports in Italy linking Marcelo Brozovic as a target for Liverpool,” Romano writes in his Caught Offside column. “But my understanding is that there have been no contacts at this stage.”

Could Marcelo Brozovic leave Inter Milan for the Premier League?

Brozovic is reportedly available at around £25 million; Inter’s well-publicised financial issues very much an ongoing concern. One of European football’s finest deep-lying playmakers, the former Dinamo Zagreb star is rumoured to be on the radar of Chelsea and a Tottenham Hotspur side who recently sacked his former Nerazzuri boss Antonio Conte.

“Brozovic could be an option for many clubs in the summer,” Romano adds. “He could have chances to leave Inter. It will also depend on the manager situation (whether Simone Inzaghi stays or goes).

“In January, his name was discussed with Barcelona.”

Barca remain in the market for an experienced midfielder; Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan and Ruben Neves among their targets.

Italy legend Beppe Bergomi, meanwhile, believes Brozovic is ‘irreplaceable’ at Inter Milan. There is, after all, a shortage of genuinely elite-level midfielders who the 2021 Serie A champions could conceivably afford.

“He is irreplaceable in (Simone) Inzaghi’s eleven,” Bergomi said last year. “You don’t have another Brozovic, another player who can do that kind of work.

“And in Europe, how many are there of Brozovic? If you have to make an effort (to keep one player), I would do it with him.”
