England are set to be without Jarell Quansah for two games at the World Cup after his red card suspension.
During England’s clash against Mexico, Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR intervention for a mistimed challenge.
The Three Lions managed to hold on and book themselves a place in the quarter-finals, but it wasn’t without its challenges.
And with Erling Haaland and Norway up next, it leaves England sweating on the fitness of Reece James and Djed Spence, who have both had their issues.
But one of the most frustrating parts for England and the FA was the way that VAR conducted themselves during the clash with Mexico.
What is your reaction to Jarrell Quansah getting a two-game ban when Folarin Balogun didn't even get one?
FIFA have hit the defender with a two-match ban for his red card against Mexico…
According to The Athletic, The FA was strongly engaged throughout the process, making the point that it felt the VAR protocol was not correctly followed.
They reportedly hoped to reduce Quansah’s punishment by highlighting that the referee was improperly shown a freeze-frame before watching the live video replay. While soccer’s guidelines dictate that officials should watch incidents at normal speed first, using still images only to find the point of contact, the FA ultimately accepted that a two-game suspension was inevitable under FIFA’s standard disciplinary rules.
And to make matters worse, the FA also cannot appeal Quansah’s two-game ban, handed down by FIFA’s independent disciplinary committee.
It was the Folarin Balogun situation that brought more spotlight onto this situation, as Donald Trump was able to call up FIFA and somehow get the decision overturned.
Yet, we’ve seen France’s appeal for Michael Olise’s yellow card rejected, and now Quansah’s red card is set to stand.
