Jamie Carragher has hit out at Tottenham fans for booing as he leaps to defend Antonio Conte from criticism.

Carragher tells Tottenham fans to trust Conte

Well, boos have been heard at Tottenham’s recent clashes with Newcastle and Sporting Lisbon, as supporters grow frustrated with the Italian’s seemingly unadventurous style of football.

Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle last Sunday, before being held to a 1-1 draw against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Wednesday to leave their hopes of reaching the Last 16 in the balance.

However, Carragher has told Tottenham fans to back Conte and his pragmatic approach, as he believes it will bring success to N17 even if it can be difficult to watch.

The 44-year-old added that he felt the booing was “harsh” from Spurs fans.

In his column for the Telegraph, Carragher wrote: “Personally, I think the reaction during the Newcastle game was extremely harsh. I am a huge admirer of the Italian and believe the longer he sticks around, the stronger Spurs will be.”

It’s a difficult one.

Fans want to be entertained, and they pay extortionate prices to follow their beloved team home and away – therefore, they are entitled to voice their concerns.

However, football is a results industry, and if you look at Tottenham’s season so far on paper, there isn’t much to complain about.

Tottenham fans must get behind Conte

As things stand, Tottenham sit third in the Premier League, and are well placed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Before Sunday’s loss to Newcastle, Spurs also had a 100% record at home in the Premier League this season.

There is still plenty of football left to play this term, and Tottenham have a great chance of winning the FA Cup or Carabao Cup – at the very least.

Perhaps there is anxiety over Conte’s future, with the 53-year-old’s contract expiring in June.

In our view, the Italian penning fresh terms would potentially change the atmosphere at Tottenham games, as fans will know everybody is committed to pulling in the same direction.

Hopefully, a solution is found to that situation soon, and Tottenham can have a successful campaign.
