Is Kulusevski on loan? Many Tottenham fans have been asking this on Google as the finer details of his move from Juventus are confusing people.

Spurs signed the Sweden international from Juventus back in January 2022 on an initial 18-month deal running until June 2023, with the north Londoners paying an £8.3m loan fee.

However, there has been no official announcement regarding the permanent signing of the 22-year-old, which has left many Tottenham fans panicking.

So, is Kulusevski on loan? Let’s take a look…

Is Kulusevski on loan?

Well, Fabio Paratici – Director of Football at Tottenham – negotiated a very complicated deal with Juventus.

As detailed by the Guardian, Spurs paid £8.3m to take Kulusevski on loan until June 2023, with the agreement including an option to buy for €30m (£26m) in the summer of 2022.

That clause was not triggered back in the summer, so the Swede is technically still on loan in N17.

However, it seems Tottenham deliberately delayed their decision to trigger that option in the summer, in order to bankroll other signings such as the £60m deal for Richarlison and the £25m signing of Yves Bissouma.

Fabrizio Romano states that Spurs still have an option to buy Kulusevski at the end of the current campaign.

In fact, the winger’s permanent arrival could even happen while the season is ongoing.

Tottenham will be obligated to pay €35m (£31m) for his signature if they qualify for the Champions League and he plays at least 45 minutes in a minimum of 20 Premier League games.

If you have struggled to follow that, we shall tidy it up – Kulusevski is currently on loan, although contractual clauses mean it is highly likely he will join Spurs on a permanent basis this summer.

The only potential issue is the fact Tottenham’s obligation to buy turns into an option to buy should they fail to qualify for the Champions League, at which point Kulusevski himself could refuse to join despite the contractual option.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t seem to be worth worrying about, as the Guardian believe the Tottenham No.21 is “extremely happy” in north London.

It may be a confusing arrangement, but there is no denying that Paratici deserves a pat on the back for bringing such a fantastic footballer to Tottenham.
