As Tottenham Hotspur and transfer rumours have become synonymous as the end of the season approaches, one move the club should steer clear of, in our view includes Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

It was claimed on Monday that Spurs were interested in getting the Cobham youth product to play for his boyhood club’s arch-rivals in the summer.

With that in mind, we have assessed why Tottenham Hotspur should back out of a potential transfer approach for Conor Gallagher.

Why Tottenham should eject Conor Gallagher transfer dream

First things first, this is not to deny that the Englishman, who was linked with a £40 million switch to Newcastle by Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport in February is a talented player.

However, Tottenham are in need of bringing in a creator as one of their biggest transfer priorities in the summer, which Conor Gallagher is simply not.

In fact, the 23-year-old’s technical deficiencies on the ball are a key facet behind why his return from Crystal Palace, where Patrick Vieira described him as ‘special’ via TEAMtalk has been one to forget.

Spurs, who only have Rodrigo Bentancur in the mould of a creative midfielder are in need of a technician, who can adapt to a variety of game-states and create chances for the forwards. Case in point, a certain Christian Eriksen.

While Conor Gallagher is capable of getting end product and may even replicate this very trait at Tottenham if a transfer goes through, he would be unable to get on the ball and dictate the tempo of a game as well.

Be it Eriksen or Modric, the fact that midfielders of this ilk are associated with some of the happiest times in N17 is due to how diverse their skillset was.

Can the same be said about the England international’s arsenal at this moment in time?

The answer is a resounding no and while Conor Gallagher would bring a lot to the table at Tottenham in terms of his tireless pressing and eye for goal in an advanced position, a transfer involving him does not make much sense if the problem at source remains unsolved.

Aside from chance creation and tempo-setting from midfield, or a lack thereof, a major reason why Spurs have fallen behind their competition is due to how low their technical level is as a side.

Barring the front three, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro and Clement Lenglet, the squad as a whole is immensely limited from a technical standpoint, as is not the case at Man City, Arsenal, Newcastle and even Brighton.

Considering Gallagher’s game is at its best in moments and mostly off-the-ball, a move should be avoided at all costs.
