Granit Xhaka is close to signing a new four-year contract with Arsenal following his collapsed move to AS Roma.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Swiss international is ‘expected to sign’ his new deal with the Gunners until June 2025. Xhaka will be 32-years-old when this new deal with Arsenal ends in four years.

The north London side were eager to sell Xhaka this summer and it looked like a transfer was on the cards with Roma.

However, the two clubs were unable to agree on a fee for the midfielder.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Xhaka had agreed to personal terms with the Serie A side and that he was keen to work under Jose Mourinho. But, the move now appears to have collapsed.

Xhaka was one of the standout performers of Euro 2020 as the 28-year-old midfielder led Switzerland to a famous win over France in the round of 16 stage of the competition.

Arsenal are taking a huge risk with new Xhaka contract

The midfielder impressed this summer. However, there was an expectation that Xhaka would leave Arsenal this window after five years with the north London club.

And to say that has been a roller-coaster would be an understatement.

Whilst there have been good moments, Arsenal supporters have often been left frustrated with Xhaka due to moments of madness from the FC Basel academy graduate.

Last season alone saw the Swiss star get recklessly sent off and throw away a lead in two different games against Burnley.

Indeed, the decision to hand Xhaka a new contract will no doubt cause further fractures in the Arsenal community. With some fans eager for the midfielder to stay and others desperate for the midfielder to leave.

But with the Gunners sticking to their guns, Mikel Arteta is making a big decision that could define his tenure at the club.
