Rhodes has struggled since moving to Sheffield Wednesday from Middlesbrough last season.

Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Brian Joicey believes Jordan Rhodes needs to get away from Hillsborough.

Rhodes has only scored nine goals in 51 games for the Owls, who paid around £8 million for the striker after his 91 goals in 189 Championship games for Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers.

Rhodes’ last goal from open play came exactly three months ago and things got worse for him this week when he was hauled off half-way through Tuesday’s defeat against Ipswich Town.

And Joicey, who scored roughly a goal every three games for Wednesday between 1971 and 1976, thinks even Rhodes himself will want to move on.

The 72-year-old told Sheffield Live TV: “When they bought him I thought, that’s a good move, he’ll score 15, 20 goals a season for Wednesday. He’s got no chance.

“I bet he can’t wait to get away from Wednesday. He might love Wednesday, where they are, the money he’s getting, but I think he needs to get away from Wednesday – call that a bad option.

“I don’t think he believes he’s going to score again – and that’s a bad thing for a striker.”

Reports at the end of the January transfer window claimed Rhodes was a loan target for Wednesday’s Championship rivals Ipswich and Sunderland, with the Sun describing him as “unhappy” at Hillsborough.

However, with three strikers missing at the time, it is perhaps little surprise that Rhodes remained with the Owls.
