David de Gea put in a rough shift as Fiorentina’s season took another hit.
The Spaniard departed Manchester United after a 12-year tenure at Old Trafford, a move that occurred two years ago.
De Gea thought about calling time on his career after his release and ended up spending a full year out of the game before signing with Fiorentina in 2024.
He had a solid first year in Florence, playing well enough to help the club finish sixth in Serie A.
The early goodwill has faded though, and De Gea now finds himself under real pressure as Fiorentina look to steady their season.
David de Gea called out for costly mistakes in Fiorentina’s ongoing struggles

Fiorentina’s winless start to the 2025/26 Serie A season continued with a 3-1 loss to Sassuolo, leaving them without a victory in their opening 14 matches.
De Gea posted a Sofascore rating of just 4.1 out of 10, the lowest on the pitch. He was charged with two errors leading directly to goals and finished with -2.04 goals prevented.
It was a rough afternoon for the Spaniard, and Italian media did not hold back in their criticism.
TuttoMercatoWeb noted that De Gea was “the first to drag his side into the abyss,” pointing out his glaring mistake on Sassuolo’s equaliser and another poor moment from a corner.
They also highlighted that Fiorentina have not won in 195 days, have the league’s worst defensive record, and have conceded more set-piece goals than any other team this season (10).
David de Gea heading for relegation with Fiorentina
Plenty of players have gone on to find success after leaving United, and for a while, it looked like De Gea might do the same following a strong start at Fiorentina.
However, things have unravelled in 2025/26 for the four-time United Player of the Year winner.
Fiorentina are rooted to the bottom of Serie A with just six points from 14 matches. De Gea has been directly involved in several costly mistakes and now faces the real possibility of relegation to Serie B.
The Spaniard signed an extension with Fiorentina over the summer, committing him to the club until 2028. But if results do not improve soon, he could be facing life in Italy’s second tier next season.
