Andy Mitten has shared his thoughts on how things are shaping up for Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United, who finds himself on the outside looking in under manager Ruben Amorim.
The 20-year-old Stockport native has only made nine league appearances this season and is yet to start a match. His only appearance in the starting lineup came back in August during a Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town, where he struggled to make an impact.
So far this season, Mainoo’s contributions have been limited to brief cameos off the bench, and he hasn’t looked quite like the player fans remember from previous campaigns.

Andy Mitten shares his view on what’s happening to Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United
Kobbie Mainoo reportedly pushed for a loan move away from Manchester United in the summer, hoping to find more consistent playing time.
However, the club chose not to grant his request, keeping him at Old Trafford where questions about his role have continued into the season.
Although there have been rumours of a January loan move, Ruben Amorim has already hinted he might stand in the way of any potential exit.
Speaking on The Athletic’s Talk of the Devils podcast, Andy Mitten pointed out that Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford is surrounded by mixed signals and uncertainty.
“He’s got to play football. Clubs can be selfish in terms of stockpiling talent. And there are so many conflicting messages here.”

Mainoo was again left on the sidelines as Amorim opted not to use him during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with West Ham at Old Trafford.
Instead, Manuel Ugarte was brought on for the second half, leaving Mainoo to watch from the bench once more.
Mitten, who is the founder and editor of the United We Stand magazine, pointed out how popular Mainoo remains with fans after their live shows.
“That is definitely a feeling within the club. And he’s a very popular player. “I was actually struck when we did those live shows just how popular he is.”
Mainoo’s contract with United runs until 2027. He now faces a growing risk of missing out on England’s squad for next summer’s 2026 World Cup if his playing time doesn’t improve.
