Dynamo Kiev defender Vitaliy Mykolenko will be unveiled as an Everton player ‘after January 1’ with the Premier League club closing in on an £18 million deal, Ukraine football reporter Igor Tsyganik tells Footballhub

It’s not entirely uncommon for mid-season transfers to be tied up long before Jools Holland sets down at his piano on New Years’ Eve.

But if Everton supporters were hoping for an early Christmas present, it seems they will be disappointed.

Rafa Benitez’s Toffees will soon tie up an £18 million deal for Ukraine international Mykolenko. Dynamo Kiev coach Mircea Lucescu even confirmed, last week, that talks were underway.

But while Everton have the paperwork ready, the I’s will not be dotted, the T’s will not be crossed, until 2021 becomes 2022.

When will Everton unveil Mykolenko?

“Official confirmation of Mykolenko’s transfer to Everton will come after January 1,” explains Tsyganik, via Sport UA.

“Now, as far as I understand, the final stage of negotiations are underway.

“The clubs are very close to ending it all. The transfer fee for Mykolenko will be 20 million euros (around £18 million).”

According to Tsyganik, Mykolenko’s departure is a source of pride for Dynamo.

President Igor Surkis, he says, is thrilled to see the 22-year-old academy graduate get his big break after making a name for himself at the Olimpiyskyi National Sports Complex stadium.

“I spoke with Igor Surkis, who is very glad that there is interest in Ukrainian footballers,” Tsyganik adds.

“He confirmed that he promised players that, if they received worthy offers, he would give them a chance to prove themselves at other clubs.”

Mykolenko’s move has sparked plenty of debate over in Ukraine.

While some have argued this is a classic case of ‘too much too soon’ for the youngster, others point out that Mykolenko can only benefit from playing against better quality opposition in a major European league.

Interestingly, Everton have reportedly fought off competition from Roma and top-flight rivals Newcastle United for Mykolenko’s signature.
