Everton are signing Ruben Vinagre and will hold a €20million (£17million) purchase option on the left back if he impresses.

The Toffees have only signed James Tarkowski so far this summer and signings are needed.

Even with Richarlison sold to Tottenham, Everton’s budget isn’t huge and they are having to work the market cleverly.

The Premier League season is drawing ever closer and Everton look to be nearing another addition for Frank Lampard’s squad.

Everton are signing Ruben Vinagre

Reports from Record on Tuesday morning suggested that Everton were very close to signing Sporting left back Ruben Vinagre.

By the end of the day, Fabrizio Romano had claimed that Vinagre had already undergone part of his medical with Everton.

Throughout those reports, it was suggested that Everton would have a permanent option as part of the deal.

Only now though has the value of that option been publicised, with Record claiming the clause will stand at €20million (£17million).

That’s double what former club Wolverhampton Wandderers have sold him for – but they will be hoping that Everton do sign Vinagre permanently.

It’s noted that Sporting will only be able to claim 50% of any fee, with the other half going to Wolves.

Sporting only just signed Vinagre permanently this summer, paying €10million (£8.5million) after a disappointing loan spell.

Sporting now want to sell Vinagre for double that fee in order to get their money back in what seems like a strange set of decisions.

Vinagre made just 12 league appearances last season and failed to become a regular with Sporting, yet the deal became permanent anyway.

Sporting already want to offload Vinagre and recoup their outlay, seemingly hoping that Everton like him enough to pay £17million next summer.

That seems unlikely given Vinagre’s recent struggles at Olympiacos, Famalicao and Sporting, as well as Everton’s budget issues.

Everton sporting director Kevin Thelwell knows Vinagre from their time together at Wolves and seemingly believes the Portuguese ace has some untapped potential; let’s see if he can really push Vitaliy Mykolenko at left back.
