Dominic Calvert-Lewin told his England press conference that he ‘hasn’t really been concentrating’ on the talk about Rafa Benitez becoming Everton’s next manager.
The Everton hitman was responding to a question where he was asked whether he will have a ‘great relationship’ with Benitez, just like he did with the now-departed, Carlo Ancelotti.
At the start of this month, Real Madrid made an unexpected call to Everton for Ancelotti’s services – and his departure started a long search for his successor.
Fast forward to today and it seems like ex-Liverpool man, Benitez, will be the one replacing the Italian in the Goodison Park dugout.
Nonetheless, this was Calvert-Lewin’s response when asked whether he thinks he will have a ‘great relationship’ with Benitez.
“In all honesty, we don’t know who the manager is yet, do we?” said Calvert-Lewin.
“For me, I haven’t really been concentrating too much on that. To not let it take too much attention away from my country and be ready for the game on Tuesday.
“So, that’s all I can really say about that.”
Of course, Benitez hasn’t been appointed yet, and given how things have panned out in this managerial hunt, anything can twist and turn during these coming days.
But if Benitez is appointed Everton boss then Calvert-Lewin will instantly become one of his key players.
In what is a pretty expensive squad assembled by previous managers, the English striker is probably the only attacker showing real consistency in the final third.
And if there are shouts of discontent at Benitez’s appointment from the Everton supporters then it’s Calvert-Lewin’s goals that will play a part in changing those views.
