Everton want Neal Maupay and a deal would give Frank Lampard the striker Rafael Benitez was unable to bring to Goodison Park.
The Toffees are desperate to sign a new striker and who can blame them?
Richarlison has left Everton for Tottenham Hotspur this summer whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin has picked up another frustrating injury.
Frank Lampard really needs another goal threat; he can’t keep going with Salomon Rondon as his only recognised centre forward, forcing him to play Anthony Gordon up top.
Money is tight at Everton but Lampard has his targets, with Maupay believed to be one of them.
Everton want Neal Maupay
The Athletic claim that Lampard has held direct talks with Maupay in an attempt to sell him on a move to Goodison Park.
Brighton and Hove Albion are ready to sell Maupay for around £15million, which may well fit into Everton’s budget right now.
The Frenchman may not set pulses racing but he has been a decent Premier League goalscorer since his 2019 move from Brentford to Brighton.
26 goals in those three seasons – 10 in the first season and eight in each of the last two – shows that Maupay can find the net at a decent rate.
Other clubs are interested too but Lampard will hope that his personal touch helps Everton secure Maupay’s signature – and succeed where Rafael Benitez couldn’t.
Some Everton fans will recall that Benitez wanted to sign Maupay last summer, but he couldn’t afford to bring him to Merseyside.
Sky Sports reported that Financial Fair Play regulations meant Everton weren’t able to sign Maupay, and he stayed at Brighton.
That will have been a major frustration for Benitez, who was without Calvert-Lewin for much of his time in charge of Everton.
Fast forward a year and Maupay is once again on Everton’s wish list.
This time, with Lampard seemingly has real hope of pulling off a deal and Maupay could finally become an Everton player after all.
