Everton face a huge roadblock in their quest to sign Inter Milan star Matias Vecino, with Maurizio Sarri interested in bringing the midfielder to Lazio this summer.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Chelsea manager is eager to reunite with many of his former players in the transfer window as Sarri aims to stamp his mark on the Lazio squad.
- Three players who could replace Fernandinho at Manchester City
- £166m superstar among best XI of under-23 free agents this summer
As well as Vecino, Sarri is looking at signing Dries Mertens from Napoli, Everton star Allan and Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri, all players who thrived under the Italian coach at some stage of their careers.
Indeed, a reunion in Rome would be an interesting transfer narrative for Sarri, yet for Everton, Lazio’s interest in Vecino could be a huge blow for the Merseyside club.
CalcioMercato have previously reported that the Toffees are interested in the Uruguayan international, who is set to become a free agent this summer when his contract with Inter expires.
A £20m signing from ACF Fiorentina in 2017, Vecino’s time with Inter has been mixed, which is what makes a move to Lazio so appealing, especially with Sarri at the helm, with the midfielder claiming that the Italian coach is one of the best he has ever worked under and a personal favourite.
Everton could struggle to sign Vecino with Lazio now interested

At 30-years-old, Vecino could be a great signing for Everton given the midfielder’s experience in one of Europe’s top leagues, yet interest from Lazio could all but ruin the Toffees’ hopes of signing the midfielder.
Indeed, with Sarri eager to sign his former maestro, Everton could be powerless in trying to convince Vecino to join the Premier League side, especially if Lazio qualify for Europe at the end of this season.
