After nine seasons, over 350 appearances, and four Premier League titles, Fernandinho will this summer call time on what has been an exceptional career at Manchester City.

At 36-years-old, the Brazilian midfielder confirmed via BBC Sport that he will depart the English giants after playing a major role in the club’s modern history, with Fernandinho taking the armband in 2020 and establishing himself as one of the finest defensive midfielders in Europe in recent years.

The Brazilian will leave a sizeable hole for City not just in spirit but also in the squad, with Rodri now the club’s only holding midfielder. Yet with the summer transfer window fast approaching, who could replace Fernandinho?

The best solution is often the one that is the easiest to solve, and Declan Rice would simply be the perfect replacement for Fernandinho at City, with the West Ham star arguably the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League and potentially beyond.

A regular England international who looks ready for a big move after flourishing in east London, City are both an ideal club for Rice as well as one of the few sides in world football who could afford West Ham’s reported £150m asking price for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Whether or not Rice would want to move this summer is another question entirely. However, with City needing a new defensive midfielder and the West Ham star arguably the best in the business, it would be a smart move for the Manchester giants if they can pull it off.

With Rodri starting the majority of games for City this season in the deep-midfield role, splashing over £100m on a similar player might not be the best idea in practice for Pep Guardiola’s side, so why not replace Fernandinho with a player who is already at the club?

Enter Yangel Herrera, who is currently out on loan with La Liga side Espanyol in what is the Venezuelan’s fourth loan spell away from the Etihad Stadium since signing for the club in 2017. Yet next season could well be the time fans finally get to see Herrera in the sky blue.

Dynamic in the midfield and a star player in La Liga, Herrera could be the perfect back-up to Rodri as well as a solid rotational player for Guardiola, with the South American able to play several roles in the midfield as seen during his time with both Espanyol and Granada.

Enzo Fernandez

City Football Group’s vast empire of clubs has been an interesting experiment in football, with the aforementioned Herrera making his name at New York City FC in a two-year loan spell that put the midfielder on the map. And Enzo Fernandez could be another name.

Currently at River Plate but with reports suggesting that City are deep in talks with the 21-year-old, Fernandez’s ability to screen the midfield has put many fans on alert that the young Argentine could be the one to replace Fernandinho this summer.

With CFG giving a platform for many promising players, Fernandez could be the latest name signed by the group to train with City and potentially go one step beyond and make an impact in the first team to replace the void left by Fernandinho.
