Rangers look to have prevailed in a season that Celtic thought would be historic

Rangers fans have responded with a mixture of disappointment and schadenfreude to Neil Lennon’s exit from Celtic Park.
It was confirmed by the club on Wednesday morning that Lennon had resigned. They said: “Celtic Football Club today announced that Neil Lennon has resigned from his position as Football Manager with immediate effect.
“We thank Neil sincerely for all he has done for the club and we wish him every success going forward.”
Celtic had begun the season full of optimism, with the their sights set on landing a historic tenth successive title.
That prospect now looks extremely remote, with Steven Gerrard’s men needing just seven points from the last eight games in order to be crowned champions.

If Rangers and Celtic win their next two games, a point at Celtic Park in March 21st’s derby would see Gerrard’s side clinch the title at the home of their rivals.
Having fallen 18 points behind their rivals and been knocked out of three cup competitions, Lennon’s time in the dugout this season has been anything but enjoyable for Celtic supporters.
The same cannot be said, however, for Rangers supporters.
As quoted by BBC Scotland earlier this month, Lennon said: “I do agree that performances, the on-field results have been disappointing.
“You’re never secure as a manager, especially when you’ve been through difficult times, but I’m quite comfortable with the way my position is at the minute, and until that changes I’ll do my best every day.
“The atmosphere around the place is good, training’s bubbly. All the players are playing for each other, and it’s quite a close-knit group at the minute.”

Reacting to the news on Tuesday night, former Celtic man Chris Sutton tweeted: “Neil Lennon had to go.
“I know this season has been a disaster but i hope after the anger settles down about this season that people respect that Neil has been a great servant to Celtic both as a player and manager.”
