HITC understands that the Football Association have been informed that Mauricio Pochettino has withdrawn from the race to become the next England manager.

The FA closed applications to succeed Gareth Southgate earlier this month and HITC is told that a number of big names were amongst those to show an interest.

One of those to emerge as a contender by making an application was former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino.

Mauricio Pochettino agrees to take charge of United States

Pochettino’s interest in England was genuine, indeed his ambition to take charge of a national team was and that has now been confirmed with his decision to accept the job as head coach of the United States.

HITC understands Pochettino has agreed to take charge and the FA in England have been informed that he is no longer in contention for their role.

The US have been looking for a new head coach since parting company with Gregg Berhalter after he was relieved of his duties following a below par performance in the Copa America.

Staged across in America, the US failed to get out of the group stages losing two of their three games.

US wanted high-profile name ahead of World Cup

The United States are due to co-host the World Cup finals in 2026 and they do not want to flop on home soil like they did in the Copa and so they went in search of a high-profile coach.

Former Crystal Palace and New York City head coach Patrick Vieira was considered whilst here was also homegrown options including Los Angeles FC’s Steven Cherundolo.

But the leading candidate quickly emerged as Pochettino and the US federation were aware that they possibly had to compete with the FA.

HITC is told that since the start of August talks have been ongoing but this week has seen Pochettino agree to take charge of the US. He will become the first foreign coach of the US since Jurgen Klinsmann’s five-year spell from 2011 to 2016.
