The Football Association officially closed applications for England’s new head coach at the start of this month.

The FA are looking for a new senior head coach after Gareth Southgate stepped down following Euro 2024.

HITC has previously revealed that the FA have been doing their due diligence on potential candidates before Southgate stepped down as they believed he would be leaving – no matter the outcome in Germany.

Lee Carsley set for interim England role alongside Ashley Cole

HITC exclusively revealed in June that Lee Carsley had emerged as one of the leading candidates, along with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and former Chelsea chief Graham Potter.

And now Carsley is set to get the chance to impress as HITC understands that he is set to become England’s new head coach on an interim basis and he will bring England legend Ashley Cole in with him.

England sources insist that they want to take their time and are ready to wait until early 2025 to appoint Southgate’s successor when their World Cup qualifiers are scheduled to begin but before that they have their Nations League campaign to navigate which sees them come up against Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece over a period from September to November.

Carsley is now set to be handed the chance to take charge of England – if only on an interim basis, but it puts him a very strong position to land the job permanently.

Carlsey wants England job on a permanent basis

HITC can confirm that Carsley does want the role and has applied for the full time job.

The FA are very proud of their new structures that have been put in place over the last decade that have seen their academies become some of the strongest in the world.

That has also included the development of their coaches through their systems at St George’s Park and the chance to have an internal appointment to succeed Southgate is seen as a huge plus point.

Carsley and his assistant Cole have excellent coaching credentials and they have also built up close relations with a number of the current squad – who were part of the European Championship winning side last year with the Under-21s.

The FA also believe that the football Carsley and Cole play, whilst not only being successful would massively appeal the England fanbase.

Carsley will now get his chance to impress as the FA continues to assess their options which include him, but also Howe and Potter.

It is understood there is interest from elsewhere and they will be considered. Former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has made it known he would be interested in the role.
