Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in signing FC Barcelona Alejandro Balde, who Liverpool were close to landing back in 2019 when the youngster was still an uncut gem in La Masia.

According to Sport, the now-19-year-old defender is on the radar for many top clubs in England after a sensational start to the season, with Balde asserting himself as Barcelona’s starting left-back ahead of the likes of Marco Alonso and Jordi Alba.

With a contract that expires in 2024, Premier League sides are now eyeing a potential move for Balde, and whilst it’s not stated, there’s a strong chance that Liverpool could be in the mix for the teenage fullback given the Reds’ previous interest in the defender.

Sport reported back in 2019 that Liverpool were not only interested in Balde, but that a deal was on the verge of being completed, with the report stating that the defender’s bags were packed ahead of a move to Merseyside and the Premier League.

However, as we know, no such move ever happened as a transfer seemingly collapsed behind the scenes. And now, in 2022, Balde could be heading to the Premier League after establishing himself as one of the best young fullbacks in Europe and one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers despite his tender age,

Indeed, Liverpool could be tempted to sign Balde in January given Andy Robertson’s agent and Konstantinos Tsimikas’ limited potential. Yet with Premier League rivals also interested and Barcelona keen to tie the defender down to a new deal, a lot of barriers face the Reds.

Balde’s rise with Barcelona this season has been nothing short of incredible, with the youngster usurping Alba’s title as the club’s starting left-back after over a decade. However, despite tempting Premier League interest, the defender should remain in Catalonia.

After all, Xavi Hernandez is building something quite special with the likes of Gavi, Ansu Fati and Pedri, and with Balde another exciting young talent, the fullback should look to become part of Barcelona’s future rather than moving to the Premier League.
