Before England’s final fixture of the World Cup against France, a true transfer bombshell landed — with Morgan Rogers claimed to be joining Chelsea for £117 million.
While he has been largely overshadowed by Jude Bellingham over the course of the tournament, the quality of Aston Villa star Rogers has never been in question.
Still, £117 million is quite the fee. Xabi Alonso is rebuilding a Chelsea side that has looked directionless under the current BlueCo ownership, and this signing is a statement of intent.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein broke the news of a verbal agreement just hours before England’s third place play-off in Miami on Saturday.
It makes Rogers the second-most expensive Premier League signing in history, only behind Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool last Sunday.
- Alexander Isak – Newcastle to Liverpool, £125m
- Morgan Rogers – Aston Villa to Chelsea, £117m
- Elliott Anderson – Nottingham Forest to Man City, £116m
- Florian Wirtz – Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool, £116m
- Moises Caicedo – Brighton to Chelsea, £115m
While an official announcement is yet to come, Ornstein is usually on point.
It will be interesting to see how he lines up alongside Cole Palmer, or if this marks the end of the Chelsea star’s time at Stamford Bridge.
