Only six teams have scored fewer goals than Wolverhampton Wanderers in this season’s Championship.
It’s a problem which has plagued them since Benik Afobe’s departure to Bournemouth a year ago and one which is yet to be rectified by this season’s recruits Paul Gladon and Andreas Weimann.
A regular scorer of goals is therefore sure to feature highly on Paul Lambert’s summer shortlist, assuming – of course – that the Scot steers Wolves away from a once-unthinkable return to League One.
And with 41 goals and counting since August 2015, there are perhaps few more appropriate candidates than Millwall’s Lee Gregory – who was endorsed this week by exiled Wolf, Jed Wallace.
“How he’s still at this level (League One) is beyond me,” Wallace told London News Online following his teammate’s brace against MK Dons last Saturday.
“For a Sheffield Wednesday, or a decent Championship side chasing promotion, he’ll get you 20 goals.”
So why not Wolves, too? Should the Black Country club survive this season, their remit once again will be to finish in the top six, given the club’s new-found financial backing.
And while he may be 28 already, Gregory’s career path – he was a non-League player with Halifax Town this time three years ago – indicates his best years are perhaps still to come.

With his contract up at the end of next season, it’s not like Wolves would need to put down too much of an investment to land him – although a move to Molineux will perhaps rely on both they and Millwall staying in their respective divisions.
