It seems as though the majority of the Liverpool fanbase, including Jamie Carragher, want Xabi Alonso to be their next manager.
Jurgen Klopp will depart at the end of the season and he is set to leave a massive void when he heads for the exit door, so this next call has to be ever-so crucial.
The issue facing Liverpool is that many big-name jobs will be available in the summer, including at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Guillem Balague suggested that, with Thomas Tuchel leaving, it’s the man running amok at Bayer Leverkusen who will take over, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (06/03/24 at 7:25 pm).
The European football expert told Jamie Carragher, ‘I am not sure you would like to hear this’, but it makes sense for the in-demand Spaniard to head to the Allianz instead of Anfield.
Jamie Carragher admitted that he has his ‘fingers crossed’ it’s his former teammate as the next Reds manager, but he then put forward the name of Ruben Amorim if it isn’t.
The Sporting Lisbon coach is another young and vibrant coach coming through, and his team are currently sitting top of the table, with a one-point lead and a game in hand.
Jamie Carragher noted that it would probably be the 39-year-old and how he has ‘great pedigree’ during his early years as a manager.
Xabi Alonso or Ruben Amorim
“He (Tuchel) will leave and if he leaves, I just wonder if Xabi Alonso will actually take over,” said Guillem Balague. “I am not sure Jamie (Carragher) would like to hear this or he agrees.
“But it makes a lot of sense for Xabi Alonso to continue the job he is doing at Bayer Leverkusen at Bayern Munich, with better players than he has ever had and with the possibility of winning the Champions League as well, just before he goes to England.”
Carragher respnded: “Liverpool will be back in the Champions League next season, they have got a great squad as well. It would be a decision for him (Alonso) to make, I would imagine. I don’t see him staying at Bayer Leverkusen. Fingers crossed, he ends up at Liverpool. I think that would be the right decision for him.
“It doesn’t matter who is on the list for me, I think it’s who would be on the list for Liverpool and what they would be looking at.
“Maybe the guy at Sporting Lisbon, Ruben Amorim. He has been in that role and has been talked about as a young and upcoming coach. Great pedigree and doing a really brilliant job, and at the top of the Portuguese league, so I would say he is the one who seems to be getting linked with Liverpool along with Xabi Alonso, so it feels like it’s one of those two.”

Liverpool pushing for dream end under Jurgen Klopp
Just like a number of seasons ago, Liverpool are, once again, pushing for four trophies under their legendary coach.
As of this moment, they are one down and three to go, with the club in the driving seat.
They are still in the FA Cup, favourites to win the Europa League given their previous Champions League pedigree and sitting top of the Premier League table ahead of their clash against Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola has only won once at Anfield – and that was during the COVID season when there were no fans.
Jamie Carragher was keen to remind Micah Richards about that, as Liverpool have a huge chance of laying down the biggest of markers at the weekend.
