Cameron Carter-Vickers failed to make an impact at Tottenham Hotspur, but the defender has been so good at Celtic that he is now being compared to Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham Hotspur sold Cameron Carter-Vickers to Celtic in the summer of 2022 after the USA international central defender impressed during a loan spell at Celtic Park in 2021-22.

Carter-Vickers came through the Tottenham youth academy, but he could not establish himself in the first team.

The 26-year-old American defender was regularly sent out on loan. Among the clubs he played for on loan from Tottenham were Sheffield United, Swansea City, Luton Town and Bournemouth.

Celtic paid £6 million for Carter-Vickers (The Daily Mail), and the defender has gone from strength to strength at the Hoops.

The defender has won the Scottish Premiership title twice, the Scottish League Cup on two occasions, and the Scottish Cup once with the Bhoys so far.

The 26-year-old is one of the first names on the Celtic teamsheet when he is available, and former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has noted just how big it is for the Hoops that he is now back to full fitness.

The Sky Sports pundit rates Carter-Vickers so highly that he has compared the defender to Liverpool and Netherlands international centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk is one of the best and classiest defenders around and has been key to Liverpool winning the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

Boyd said about Carter-Vickers being available again for Celtic on Sky Sports News (1:10 pm, March 2, 2024): “It’s huge. You speak of Van Dijk and the way that he allows Liverpool to play, Carter-Vickers is exact same in the way he allows Celtic to play higher up the pitch. Because of the pace he has got, he covers the ground so quickly.”

Carter-Vickers was linked with a return to Tottenham in the summer of 2023 after the North London club appointed Ange Postecoglou as their head coach. Postecoglou came from Celtic.

Nothing materialised, and I do not think that Tottenham are going to bring the defender to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium anytime soon.

It is good to see Carter-Vickers flourishing at Celtic, who are a massive club and regularly play in Europe’s top club competitions.
