HITC understands that Chelsea’s hierarchy is split on the future of head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea have under-performed this season despite having one of the most expensive squads ever assembled in the Premier League.

Pochettino himself has had little bearing on transfers since arriving at the club in the summer of 2023, the task of blending the raft of new arrivals has proved to be an issue that The Blues did not foresee as being such a struggle – despite the fact they have reached one cup final this term, although that ended in disappointing fashion with the late 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Wembley in the Carabao Cup.

Pochettino future questioned

When joining Chelsea, Pochettino signed a two-year deal with an option, but questions are being asked within the corridors of power at Stamford Bridge over whether the Argentine can turn things around.

Pochettino firmly believes that if Chelsea land their top summer targets, including a new striker and goalkeeper, then they would be ready to challenge at the top of the table- however, sources with knowledge of the situation have told HITC that their are doubts about whether that would happen.

HITC understands that Chelsea’s footballing department are considering a change of head coach, but the club’s co-owner Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will ultimately make any decision on whether to stick with Pochettino or not.

HITC is told that whilst some think a new coach would improve matters, there are also notable voices suggesting that given the hand dealt to him, Pochettino has done very well and should be given more time and at least be able to take the club into next season.

Decision yet to be made

As it stands, a firm decision has not been made – although sources have confirmed to HITC that the club are doing their due diligence on potential replacements, should they need to make a move.

Pochettino has made it clear at various points that he feels he has the backing of the owners, and he insisted this week that he was ‘confident’ that they would continue to give him the time needed to turn things around.

Pochettino was asked by the Evening Standard is he had the club’s confidence.

“Why not? I am confident,” Pochettino said. “Until they decide to tell me something else. But at the moment, I don’t think they are going to tell me anything different.”
