Liverpool are keen to bring Momodou Sonko to the Premier League but BK Hacken’s sporting director insists the Barcelona-linked wonderkid won’t be going anywhere on the ‘cheap’ amid such ‘huge interest’.

HITC Football understands that Liverpool are in the race to sign one of the brightest young talents in Scandinavian football. But, as you might have guessed considering there is such ‘huge interest’ in the teenager from across the continent, Liverpool are not alone.

Barcelona are keen on Momodou Sonko too. As are an RB Leipzig side with a proud tradition of snapping up rising stars and turning them into diamonds, Naby Keita and Dominik Szoboszlai arriving at Anfield after Red Bull gave them wings.

Liverpool face Barcelona battle for Momodou Sonko

Martin Ericsson, BK Hacken’s sporting director, is under no illusions about the fact that Sonko’s future probably lies in one of Europe’s major leagues.

But, he says, the Allsveksan outfit will not be forced into selling their prized asset for below his market value, especially with a bidding war between some of the continent’s biggest clubs on the cards.

“There’s really nothing new here (regarding Sonko’s exit). We are still in a good dialogue, but nothing is finished,” Ericsson tells Fotbolskanalen

“The interest is huge. Then, it must be said that there have been some other young players who end up in the spotlight in Sweden. But the interest is great.

“I think everyone understands that this is no cheap player. I think that pretty much all the big clubs in Europe know who ‘Mommo’ is and have followed him. But there are a lot of things that have to fall into place for it to become a deal.”

Reports have indicated that Hacken want around £7.5 million.

Sonko, at the age of just 18, scored 10 goals and set up seven more from the wing during the 2023 Swedish football season. The Gothenberg-born teenager insists that he has not yet held talks over a move to Anfield, though there are some members of the Sonko family who would love to see him end up in Liverpool red.

“If (Klopp) were to call privately, I would laugh. It is quite unlikely,” Sonko smiles. “It is easier for him to reach my agents than me. I haven’t received that call anyway.

“I have some (family members) who are Liverpool fans, and some Barca fans. They want me to go to the club they support. It’s kind of funny.”

HITC Football understands that Liverpool are also looking into Sonko’s free-scoring compatriot, Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon. The club’s head coach, however, suggested this week that even a bid of £73 million would not be ‘enough’ to land the former Coventry City talisman.
