Paul Merson says he now understands why Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal wanted to sign Douglas Luiz from Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

After helping Aston Villa to Europe last season and winning the club’s Player of the Year, the 25-year-old isn’t stopping there and is taking his game to another level during this current campaign.

That’s why Paul Merson was sure to reiterate his previous claim that Douglas Luiz is ‘the most underrated midfielder in the Premier League’, as he told Sportskeeda

The former double-winner also added ‘it’s not hard to see why Arsenal wanted him’ because he thinks he is a player who can ‘do it all’.

Arsenal did come knocking for Douglas Luiz’s services during the summer of 2022, but Villa held firm and their star midfielder ended up signing a new contract.

There are suggestions that those at the Emirates are keen on the former Manchester City man again, with Paul Merson speaking highly of the player.

Douglas Luiz praise

“As I said last week, Douglas Luiz is the most underrated midfielder in the Premier League currently,” said Merson.

“The lad can do it all and shows up every week; it’s not hard to see why Arsenal wanted him earlier this year.”

Douglas Luiz price

£100 million seems to be the magic number for midfield players in today’s transfer market and you can bet your bottom dollar that Villa will want that type of fee for their player.

The last time Villa were forced to sell one of their best players was Jack Grealish and he joined Manchester City for £100 million.

So, whilst those in the Midlands, who want Champions League football, will do everything to keep hold of Luiz, it’s going to take a lot to get him to the Emirates or out of Villa full stop!

And with Luiz’s contract running until 2026, they are sorted in that regard because they can bat away anything that comes their way.
