Steve McManaman praised Cody Gakpo for proving him wrong during Liverpool’s controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Cody Gakpo was ever so close to helping nine-man Liverpool secure a point against Tottenham when he fired in a brilliant equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

That goal was described as ‘absolutely superb’ by Steve McManaman, as he even admitted that Liverpool’s £35 million January capture (Guardian) made him look like a ‘fool for doubting him’, as he told Premier League Productions (30/09/23 at 6:30 pm).

Even before the 24-year-old levelled the scores, he had plenty of chances to find the back of the net, but he just couldn’t find that ruthless nature.

Not only were Jurgen Klopp’s side down to ten men for large periods, and then later on nine, but they should have scored well before Cody Gakpo or Son Heung-min had the ball in the back of the net.

That Luis Diaz ‘offside’ call has caused a big stir, which even left Tottenham-supporting pundit Jamie O’Hara fuming.

Gakpo goal for Liverpool

“When he makes this move, I am just thinking ‘just chuck your left foot at it,” said McManman.

“But actually, he goes away from goal. But the turn and connection he makes on it is superb. Absolutely superb. I am the fool for doubting him.”

VAR takes the headlines once again

Another weekend of football action. Another VAR call. Another VAR error. And another PGMOL statement.

Now you are just waiting for the Howard Webb apology. At this rate, he might as well prepare one before games kick off because it is becoming a common theme.

From Wolves to Fulham to Manchester United. A number of teams have been on the back end of some horror calls during the early stages of the new season, but not many will probably be as bad as what Liverpool went through at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
