Paul Merson says Conor Gallagher would be an ‘absolute hero’ if he snubbed a deadline day transfer from Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.
The former Arsenal player, who is a Chelsea fan, added that he would be ‘shocked’ if Conor Gallagher decided to make that switch to Hotspur Way, with the increasing possibility that Brennan Johnson does move to Spurs from Nottingham Forest.
It has been well-documented for many, many years now that the feelings between Chelsea and Tottenham, on the field of play, off the field and in the boardroom, has never been pleasant.
That was mentioned by Merson, who stated that he is a ‘big fan’ of Gallagher and how he thinks he has started well under Pochettino at Stamford Bridge, as he told Deadline Day on Sky Sports (01/09/23 at 3:05 pm).
But the 23-year-old has been a target of many clubs this summer, including the chance that he could move to Spurs.
Whilst that talk will rumble on until the window slams shut, Merson just can’t see it happening.

“It would be a good move for Tottenham,” said Merson. “I think it would be a good signing for Tottenham, Conor Gallagher. I am a big fan.
“I think it’s a hard one. Chelsea-Tottenham. If Tottenham come in and he turns it down, then he will be a hero with the Chelsea fans. He will be an absolute hero. I think it’s a hard one for him. He has come through the ranks at Chelsea. I think, it’s one of them, one club you don’t go to is Tottenham, if you are a Chelsea player.
“I see him being a big part of Chelsea. I have been very impressed with him this season – I would be shocked if he went to Tottenham.”

Gallagher should stay at Chelsea
Unless the England international is told that he just isn’t wanted by Chelsea or Pochettino, then he should stay put at a team that is looking to grow after last season’s troubles.
It’s more likely that Chelsea return to the Champions League than Spurs, plus, Gallagher has started the new Premier League season very well.
And in the midst of buying all these players and splashing the cash for fun, don’t forget about your academy stars because they are just as valuable, as Chelsea have let a few go in recent years that have since gone on to do very well.
