Jamie O’Hara has claimed that Eric Dier is ‘upset’ at not becoming Tottenham Hotspur’s next captain, as he urged Ange Postecoglou to sell him.

The 29-year-old wasn’t part of Ange Postecoglou’s first matchday squad that saw Tottenham record a 2-2 draw with Brentford – new signing Micky van de Ven, goalscorer Cristian Romero and linked-away Davinson Sanchez got the minutes.

O’Hara made it clear that Eric Dier ‘shouldn’t be starting’ for Spurs, even though he was snubbed at the weekend and how his ‘time is up’, as he told Sky Sports News.

The England international joined Spurs in 2015 when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge and he was part of the team that challenged for the Premier League title, consistently played in the Champions League and reached the final of the European Cup.

But it’s fair to say that Dier has declined in recent years, along with the club, and it’s time that the manager refreshed the backline.

Postecoglou, who named Son Heung-min as captain, seems to have got the message from the fans, with O’Hara sharing his thoughts on the player.

On rumours of a ‘fall out’ with Postecoglou: “I don’t think he should be starting for Tottenham,” said O’Hara. “His time is up at Tottenham, if I am honest. I don’t think he is good enough to play for Tottenham.

“Does he be a squad player? Maybe. But I don’t think he sees himself as a squad player. I think he feels he is good enough to be playing.

“I think he is upset that he hasn’t been given the opportunity to be captain or vice-captain. He has been at the club a long time and he has been a loyal servant.

“But he just isn’t good enough. Tottenham needs to move on. This is the future now. New manager, we have some new players in, freshen it up and see what happens.”

Dier needs to leave

In recent years, along with Spurs falling off, so has Dier, who for many years was a top, top player for the club.

From playing at right-back, at the heart of the defence or in the middle of the park, the £85k-a-week star (Spotrac) has played various roles for both club and country.

At times, many haven’t been able to pin-point what his best position actually is, which hasn’t helped, especially when his form has gone out of the window.
