Michael Owen has changed his mind about Guglielmo Vicario following Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Last week, the former England striker claimed that Guglielmo Vicario looked ‘half-shaky’ on his debut, as Tottenham recorded a 2-2 draw at Brentford.

But, against Manchester United yesterday, Owen stated that he was ‘impressed’ by the club’s new number one goalkeeper after his ‘really good’ performance, as he told Premier League Productions (19/08/23 at 7:40 pm).

In the second half, Spurs were the better side, as both of their goals, via Pape Matar Sarr and a Lisandro Martinez own goal, came during that period.

But it was only after a first-half of real pressure that saw the away team miss a number of guilt-edge chances to score.

That was largely thanks to the efforts of Vicario in between the sticks, and after Owen’s comments last week, he was sure to give the Italian his flowers this time around.

“I was particularly impressed with the goalkeeper,” said Owen. “In this game, in particular. I thought he looked half-shaky in his debut.

“But (against Manchester United), he looked really good.”

Vicario’s arrival has been a long time coming

It could be argued that Tottenham should have invested in a player like Vicario two seasons ago, because the performances of Hugo Lloris had been on the decline for a while now.

The previous campaign was the last straw, and he knew it, because there were just too many error-prone displays from the World Cup winner – he is set to head for the exit door before the summer transfer window slams shut.

If Vicario can match what Lloris did for large parts of his Spurs career, then just like the Frenchman, he will be in between the sticks for the club for at least a decade.
