Paul Merson says Harry Kane would secure a transfer to Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, in order to get one over on Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy.

Mauricio Pochettino becoming Chelsea manager ruffled a few feathers at his former club, so for Harry Kane to join him at Stamford Bridge would cause serious controversy.

The 30-year-old still has a chance to leave Tottenham this summer, with Bayern Munich knocking, but Merson’s take on it all is that if he does become a free transfer in 2024, then ‘why not’ in him joining Chelsea, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports News (08/08/23 at 7:10 pm).

Kane is a Tottenham legend and their club’s all-time leading goalscorer, so for him to move across London, well, it would be interesting to see the reaction of his fans.

Whilst Pochettino isn’t English or embedded within Spurs like Kane, would the player himself even consider it if Chelsea came knocking?

Well, former Arsenal player Merson, who is a boyhood Chelsea fan, thinks it can happen and he feels someone like Daniel Levy would be a reason behind it.

“And then go to Chelsea for free,” said Merson. “Why not? He can go wherever he wants.

On if Kane would join Chelsea because he is a Tottenham man: “All depends on what the situation is now. Is he sitting there and Levy is bidding him out of going to all these other clubs?

“Then he goes, ‘you know what. I will sit here quietly, then I will do you and I will go and sign for Chelsea’.”

Kane – one of the Premier League’s best

If Kane stays at Spurs, sees out his contract and then leaves on a free, he would have the footballing world gunning for his signature.

Chelsea and Manchester United have always been mentioned when it comes to English teams, even former Liverpool player Jose Enrique wanting the ‘very underrated’ star at Anfield, as he posted on his Instagram story in 2022.

But so will Real Madrid enter the picture, so perhaps, he is better off waiting it 12 months, then picking who he wants to join next summer rather than what seems to be the one real option on the table now – Bayern Munich.
