Paul Merson thinks Tottenham Hotspur would have to accept Bayern Munich’s latest bid for striker Harry Kane.

Given that Harry Kane has less than 12 months left on his Tottenham contract and is heading towards walking away for nothing in 2024, then Merson says ‘you can’t be that mad’ to put yourself in that situation, as he told Sky Sports News (08/08/23 at 7:05 pm).

Bayern Munich are trying to do everything they can to knock Daniel Levy’s door down and get him to accept an offer for the club’s leading goalscorer, a bid of £95 million has gone in, according to Sky Sports.

Even with Tottenham’s opening Premier League game against Brentford around the corner and suggestions that Kane will ‘stay’ if nothing is resolved by then, the club could yet reject this latest offer.

Spurs fans will certainly hope that’s the case because, without their star man up front, they are going to struggle to cope because of how much he means to them.

Merson was asked about Bayern’s latest offer and how he thinks the London club will have to accept it.

On if Spurs can turn down £95m bid for Kane: “Not with one year left and if they think he is going to walk for free at the end of it,” said Merson. “30-years-old, I don’t really pay attention to that. The way he plays, he can play until he is 35 or 36, easily.

“He doesn’t rely on pace. His brain is as good as anybody’s. I sit here today and I am still shocked Manchester United haven’t bought him. You would have got a good 4-5 years out of him and Manchester United would have won the league.

“Surely, they can’t let him go for nothing next season, surely?! I know there is a lot of money in the Premier League, but you can’t be that mad and will this Tottenham team get into the top four next season? I would be shocked.”

Big week in Kane’s future

The one person that needs the answer the most is Ange Postecoglou. In order for him to plan ahead, he has to know for certain if Kane will be at the club or not.

And finally, perhaps just finally, he might get his answer by the end of this week.

If the rumours are true that Kane will stay if nothing is resolved, then the England captain has to come out and publicly address it, rather than allowing the transfer talk to continue because it won’t shutdown until the window slams shut.
