Tottenham Hotspur are about to complete the signing of Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips and could have him in Ange Postecoglou’s squad over this weekend.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has reported on Twitter this morning that Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of signing Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers.

The report has claimed that Tottenham will pay £2 million in transfer fees for Phillips.

That is the 18-year-old defender’s release clause in his contract at Blackburn.

Jacobs has added that Tottenham could complete the signing of the England Under-19 International centre-back over the weekend.

Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips a long-term signing for Tottenham Hotspur

In our opinion, Tottenham Hotspur have to view Ashley Phillips as a long-term signing and should not expect the Blackburn Rovers central defender to make an immediate impact at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

We believe that Spurs should not put undue pressure on the defender.

Perhaps Tottenham should initially place Phillips in their youth team.

After all, Phillips is only 18 and is just starting his career.

And he has been playing in the Championship.

Phillips made five starts and three substitute appearances in the Championship for Blackburn last season.

The defender made two starts and one substitute appearance in the FA Cup for Rovers.

Interestingly, Tottenham are about to complete the signing of another teenager.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Spurs have agreed a deal to sign Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham will pay Argentine club Rosasio Central £13 million) plus add-ons for the 19-year-old Argentine striker.

Like Phillips, Spurs have to be patient with Veliz as well and should not expect him to hit the ground running at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs will be aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table next season.
